Masterpieces in Process

Masterpieces in the Making
The book of Proverbs contains a verse often cited in the context of close friendships or marriages:

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17 NIV

We aim to uplift, support, and refine each other emotionally, physically, and spiritually. However, the true meaning of this verse extends beyond the quaint.

Iron is honed through intense heat and friction, by being cut and filed. It endures beating to be transformed into something more beautiful, functional, and superior to its prior form.

The sharpening process is deliberate and can be uncomfortable. It’s a conscious friction that typically yields a purer, more resilient, and keener character. We are not refined by superficial, negligent, or random interactions, but rather by those who compassionately remove the superfluous elements—who see and foster the potential masterpiece that God envisions for us.

We may be honed by mentors, pastors, spouses, teachers, and friends. Additionally, we are refined by our most faithful companion—the Holy Spirit. This divine entity, the third aspect of the Trinity, undertakes the meticulous task of refinement. The Holy Spirit is akin to a personal, expert metalsmith—precise, attentive, reliable, and sincere.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

By yielding to God’s transformative work within us, we can assist others in recognizing their own inner masterpieces. Today, embrace God’s refining touch. Invite Him to identify the aspects of your life that require polishing, and willingly submit to His transformative intentions.
